Expertise
Laramide's expertise is focused on groundwater and water-quality issues,
especially:
- Investigation and remediation of groundwater and vadose-zone contamination
- Numerical modeling of groundwater flow and contaminant transport
- Database management and implementation of Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) for environmental evaluations
- Quantitative evaluation and modeling of vapor-phase flow and transport
- Design, execution, and evaluation of single-well and multi-well aquifer
tests
- Performance and evaluation of remediation pilot tests
- Evaluation of in-situ groundwater remediation technologies
- Water-quality and water-resource assessments
Walter Weinig, Laramide's Prinicipal Hydrogeologist, earned his Master
of Science degree in hydrology and water resources from the University
of
Arizona.
He earned
his Bachelor
of Science
degree
in geology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He is a registered
Professional Geologist in Arizona, California, Kansas, Wisconsin, and
Wyoming and a Listed
Environmental Scientist in Colorado. Walter is a member of the American
Geophysical Union, the Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers,
the American Chemical Society, and the Colorado Groundwater Association.
Laramide's team is experienced in the use of a wide variety of investigative
and analytical tools. In nearly 20 years of work, our professionals have
conducted field investigations and detailed, quantitative evaluations
at sites
throughout
the United States. Our project experience includes:
- Evaluation of contaminant distribution and identification of
facilities contributing to costs at four treatment locations in regional
groundwater plume.
- Groundwater flow and transport modeling to evaluate potential
historical impacts of contamination on public water supply. Assessment
of 3-dimensional contaminant distribution over time.
- Pilot test of lime injection for in-situ remediation of acid
rock drainage in abandoned underground mine.
- Pneumatic fracturing pilot test to enhance combined soil vapor
extraction/air sparging system performance.
- Soil vapor extraction pilot tests to identify well and/or trench
spacing and operational parameters at several sites.
- Analytical flow and transport calculations to identify potential
sources of contamination at municipal water-supply well. Assessed plume
distribution and flow paths.
- Evaluation of alternatives for operation of groundwater remediation
system. Results used to determine appropriate groundwater cleanup standards.
- Evaluation of groundwater contaminant distribution due to unlined
evaporation ponds, optimization of monitoring network.
- Environmental permitting for acquisitions of existing manufacturing
facilities by client company.
- Litigation support for toxic-tort and cost-recovery actions related
to groundwater contamination.
- Feasibility study of innovative in-situ remedial technologies
for chlorinated solvents in groundwater to accelerate cleanup at an
active manufacturing facility. Evaluated distribution of primary contaminants
and daughter products along flow path.
- Water-resource assessment for a Native American tribe.
- Well permitting and stream-depletion calculations
for a community water system.
- Multi-phase flow and contaminant transport modeling to quantitatively
evaluate soil and groundwater remedial design alternatives, optimizing
designs for several projects.
- Developed computer code to evaluate pneumatic pumping tests
based on aquifer-test analysis package.
- Conceptual design of soil-vapor and groundwater extraction
systems under Superfund. Optimized designs resulted in substantial
capital
and operational cost savings.
- Technical support of commercial well-hydraulics interpretation
program.
Through its associations with other environmental professionals and firms,
Laramide offers additional capabilities in geochemistry, risk assessment,
environmental investigation and remediation, and data management/GIS.
